Everyone sometime of another has a experience that changes their life, well mine just happen to be this year in Lancaster. CHWC wasn't what I had expected this year, it was way more. On "taco" tuesday a staff member in Lancaster got up to give his testimony. When I heard him tell his testimony I said to myself "Oh my gosh, this is just like me but opposite sex," we had both made similar decisions that adventually led us to turning to God. I realized at that point in time that God had sent me to that camp to meet him. Orignally my youth group signed up for Pittsburgh but later in the year we had to change to Lancaster. His testimony inspired me to tell him mine, so during 4 corners I went to him and we talked and we both realized that the decisions we made brought us to a similar decision to be apart of some sort of ministry. He wants to be a priest and I want to be a youth minister. Catholic Heartwork Camp made me realize that there are people out there like me and that God works in mysterious ways. Without Catholic Heartwork Camp, I probably wouldn't be as close to God as I am now. Catholic Heartwork camp is truely a mission sent from God. In fact, it even inspired me to apply for staff in the coming years. Father Geoff was amazing (the best priest ever), Jon (camp MC) was hilarious as always, and daily mass, adoration, and 4 corners rocked. In all, it was a wonderful experience and thanks to everyone who made it possible. However, I have two things to comment on: First, I think 4 corners should have been longer, especially at next level -- does it seem like it's getting shorter to everyone else? This is the second year we've had the honor of having the Workcampers in Riverpark. Our neighborhood is a very low-income area. The average selling price of a home is $35,000. Typical surrounding neighborhoods are very depressed areas, full of hopelessness. That used to be the story here. Catholic HEART has changed that for us, in the last two years the Team Leaders and Workcampers have been involved in 25 work sites, you have restored hope and dignity to 25 families. Every resident in Riverpark has been touched by the work you did. You should all hold your heads just a little bit higher and know in your hearts that you lifted the spirits of many! You guys are incredible! The homes that were repainted, the jungle (my mother's yard) that you tamed, are absolutely beautiful!!! My mother is 88 years old and very frail, she still cries when she goes outside and sees the beauty you left for her. My dream is that these last images will carry on with her into eternity. You guys are our angels; I can never thank you all enough for the work and dedication you put into each and every project. Team Leaders, and troubleshooters you guys know how to move mountains! Each time, the experience was wholly different and equally incredible. The first year, camp showed me what our faith could be, it showed me that Catholicism is more than (mindlessly) reciting prayers and (boring) hour long homilies and receiving the Eucharist--it's also about love and friendship and community and giving and, of course, service. The second year, camp solidified my already deep faith, strengthening my trust and belief in the Lord and his amazing ways; and it also showed me the infinite value in a helping hand, a smile, a shoulder, or a hug. And this year, well, this year did what I had almost thought was impossible: my six days at camp undid months worth of pain and misery; it brought me back to the God I had thought had forgotten me (or more like, I had forgotten); it reminded me that no matter how far I stray down the wrong road, God will always lead me back home. I cannot thank you all enough for the awesome and, frankly, miraculous experience you have brought me, and to other teens all over the country. Living strong in our faith isn't exactly easy in today's world, and the gift of knowing that there are thousands of friends across the country who feel exactly as I do is beyond words. I also wanted to say that you--via camp--taught me something...unreal. I never believed it possible, but every single person I have come across during my time with Catholic Heart, I love. Every single face I saw, hand I held, resident I helped--and even those that I clashed with or didn't get on with quote like I'd hoped--I love them as if they were family. What's more, ever since my first trip to CHWC, I love people I don't even know. Strangers I smile at while walking to class or the little old people that sing off key at church, I love them deeply. It's...I don't even know how to explain it. It sounds odd typing these words but I am so much happier, so much kinder, so much better since becoming a small part of the epic thing you have created.
