CommentsMrs. McVeigh here from mission trip. Ever since we ran into each other at your church back in August, I have been meaning to follow up with you on a comment I made to youthat day about messages still being revealed regarding our mission trip experience. (I hadn't forgotten you!). I'm of the mind set that it's better late than never! So anyway, here's what I wanted to share with you: The first picture that is attached is one of the rusty nails that the Trouble Shooters used to try and prop up the foundation of the house we were working on. At first, I had discarded them as trash, but when it came down to the last couple hours of our service at the home and the Trouble Shooters didn't have time to run up to the store to get the needed supplys, these nails and screws were the only choice they had! As the Trouble Shooters began to pick through these nails and screws, they found just the size they needed and were thrilled! I was surprised at their reaction because I thought for sure they would be disappointed in the state of the rust on the nails and that they wouldn't be usable. But instead, the Trouble Shooters responded with "Awesome!! these are perfect!". As they began to use the first couple of screws, under the house, I could here them saying "shoot" as they were breaking. I remember going outside and asking a few of you to pray over the screws so that they wouldn't break (before they could finish the flooring in the house, they first needed to repair the foundation of the house). I thought a strange thing to pray about, but that was our need at that moment and I knew that the Lord would help us! Well, next thing you know, the screws are working as I could hear the automated screw driver zipping things tightly together. Success!! They were able to prop up the foundation in that spot of the house wit h those rusty old nails and screws and subsequently finish the flooring job. As I thought about the spiritual meaning of this....it accured to me that this was HUGELY symbolic of what we are trying to do at Catholic Heart Workcamp......the foundation of the house if rotting and falling apart (example, we see many professed Catholics/Christians not living as such, we see society making wrong choices on the whole...and even the church institution, at times, lets us down and seems like it is rotting and the foundation sagging and threatening to give way and collapse). A few of us are noticing this and are trying to prop up it's foundation the best we can with what we have. So what do we use to help us to do this but what we originaly discarded....the rusty and nails and screws. To me, this is SOOO symbolic of the crucifixion. As I look at the attached picture of the nails.....it is just so symbolic. What our society has discarded is the very thing they need to be resored!!....and that, of course is Jesus Christ, himself, and his sacrifice on the cross on our behalf. Christ Jesus is the one who restores the foundation! So anyway, I hope this is not too deep for you! Jason and I spoke quite a bit about the symbolic nature of this and he, too, felt this message from the Lord profoundly!! So, anyway, I wanted to share this with you because I hope you know what a HUGE part you played during mission trip. Thank you for your part in this effort. It's SOOO much more than just work on that house, it's restoration of the foundations of our faith; it's the HOPE you gave that family....to that little boy. You were an amazingly hard worker that week Corey! You were the one underneath that house in that crawl space with the Trouble Shooters helping to prop up the foundaton! YOU are an a mazing young man Corey and I just want to encourage you to keep working on the foundation of THE house!!! the Lord is smiling on YOU!! : )
In Christ Jesus,
Mrs. McVeigh

CommentsHI! I was wondering if I could get some insight from the adult community here. I have been asked by my priest to look into taking our kids on a mission trip. How do you recommend getting this started. It'll be the first mission trip for these kids.
Thanks!

CommentsSo my grandpa went to the ER last night, guys. Apparently he has a case of pneumonia. So please send all your prayers and love to him. He'll be 90 in a little more than a month, so it's not like this isn't unexpected, but still. I and my family could use some extra prayer.

CommentsTo all who prayed,
Last May I asked for prayers for the healing of my son Patrick who had been injured in a farm accident. He had surgery the 18th of May to repair a crushed vertebrae. The 4 ribs and the fractured pelvic have healed on their own. Today the doctor told Patrick that he could lift 30 pounds and to come back in 6 months. Thank YOU to all who thought of Patrick and prayed for him. He is healing due to all those prayers. He wil drive himself back to college tonight. Our God is so good He answers prayers. Thank you all. You are in my prayers this day. God Bless. Tim

CommentsThis is in response to the posting from Jessica, asking for adult input about youth mission trip. I am the youth coordinator for St. Patrick's/St. Thomas in Central Illinois.
I will be attending my 7th Catholic Heart Work camp the summer of 2008. This is a totally awe inspiring ministry and my suggestion is to pick a camp and sign your kids up. The first camp I attended in Denver as just a chaperone for our group (it was their first experience too) forever changed my life. Little did I know that the following year, I would be the youth group coordinator and still be attending camps 7 years later. There is no way to duplicate the experience your students will get at a camp away from home. I can not encourage you enough to do it!!! Feel free to contact me if you would like more info or would like to talk to me.

CommentsDear Mrs. Lisa Walker,
I am writing to thank you for everything you do. Catholic Heart Work Camp has been an amazing experience for me! If it was not for CHWC I can promise you I would not be as close to God as I am today. Not only has each trip helped me grow stronger in my faith but they have also helped me be more outgoing and not as shy. I now love sharing my faith with others anyway I can. My name is Amanda Quail I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 18 years old and a freshman in college. I am the oldest of four kids and last summer my brother (15), sister (17) and I all got to go on the same trip together, it was one of my favorites for that reason. My youngest sister (14) can not wait till she is old enough to go with our parish. I have been to four different cities with CHWC in the past four years. Each trip has been just as amazing as the others, everything from the people in my groups, to the residents and the staff members is just full of love and faith! You are doing a great job with everything and I just wanted to let you know it. I would guess you hear from people quite often telling you how life changing the trips are and how much they bring people closer to god. I just had to tell you my self!! I am so extremely disappointed that St. Louis, MO in 2007 was my last trip as a camper. This idea makes me pray that maybe one day when I'm old enough, I will be able to be a staff member. I just dream of the day I can share my faith and help other teens grow in their own faith as a CHWC staff member. Just understand that day could not come soon enough. I am still helping with different retreats and with my parish youth group as much as I can but being a staff member is my dream! I want to thank you and your husband and all the people for making it possable for teens to grow stronger in their faith while changing the world. You all are such amazing people, may God bless you in all that you do!
God Bless,
Amanda Quail
PS. I know im late but, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Subject: TASC Youth Group "Guy's Night" in NJ
Hi Steve,
This is Jen Fox from St. Anthony Church in Hawthorne, NJ. I don't know if you remember us but we were at the Prince Frederick, MD camp this past July. You and I had spoken, after one of the last contact meetings that week, about the lack of young men in the church today and I had mentioned that I was thinking of programming a "Male Bonding with Jesus" night and invite all the men specifically from our community.
Well, we had it two weeks ago and it was a HUGE success!!!! We had affectionately dubbed it "Bring a Guy Night" because we wanted to ladies to feel welcome, too. We didn't want them to think we don't value their presence but we also wanted them to see how important they are to the faith of our guys. So everyone (male or female) brought a new guy who had never been to our youth group before. We had some guys come back who were part of our group in the past but had strayed a bit and I invited a friend who's a youth minister (male) to come and conduct the night with our male adult leaders. Who wants to hear a girls point of view on this right? Well, the ladies had plenty to say, as well!!! We started off with a clip from "Facing the Giants"...don't know if you've ever seen it....but it's a very pivotal clip where the captain of the football team is pushed to his limits and realizes he is not living up to his potential and has the power to influence his friends in the positive direction. We talked about that and what truly makes a man a "man". What are the characteristics women look for, what do the men see in themselves and others? Then we moved into male role models in our lives and faith role models in general...what characteristics to do they display? And then we transitioned into a mini-prayer service reflection moment where we had little popsicle stick crosses and one one side we wrote our weaknesses and struggles and on the other we wrote our strengths. Then we came back together as a large group and discussed what those struggles were and how to we deal with them as "men" and "women" no longer "boys and girls" in our faith. How can our strengths help us and where to do we see God in this picture? Then we ended with a longer prayer service of music, readings and the teens blessing each other Holy Water.
It was an AMAZING night!!! Not the large turnout I was hoping for but we had almost 50 kids (half guys, half girls, though!) So I'm grateful for the kids that were there and we prayed for the ones who could not be. It was truly inspiring to see....very moving! We all left there on such a high....hard to get to sleep that night!!!
So I just wanted to touch base with you on this and tell you that the men are our there and thirsty for the Lord! They were all so responsive and excited....I'm getting worked up again...!!! Thanks, again, for all you do for our kids. We're planning on attending the NC camp this year and are getting our paperwork together as we speak. Look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you this summer!!! Hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving and looking forward to a super Christmas season!!
Blessings!!!!
:) jen fox :)

CommentsHey Everyone!!!
San Antonio is getting ready again. We are going to have a fantastic camp this year. Take a look at the book "Mission Trip Prep" as a way to prepare the hearts of your youth. We are going to do a Taco Tuesday (breakfast tacos - hey this is San Antonio) prayer morning for the 10 weeks prior to camp. Just an idea you adults may find helpful.
Come to San Antonio!!! Shane

CommentsHi Steve,
I just wanted to let you know that my Great Aunt passed away this morning. She suffered a massive heart attack back in August and has battled many health problems since then. Over the weekend her kidney's began to fail. She's a wonderful woman and will be missed greatly. I will be in Winter Park on Friday of this week until Tuesday to be with family and attend calling hours and the funeral. Thank you for your prayers. Kate Deasy
