SCHOOL FACTS

Showers - We do not have showers at Our Lady of Perpetual Help but we will be showering at the Catholic Charities Volunteer Centers.

Program Area -The program area is a gym and it is air conditioned.

Sleeping Arrangements - The campers will be sleeping in classrooms that are air conditioned.  However, the Archdiocese of New Orleans does not allow us to sleep 18 year olds and older in the same rooms with minors so the adults (18 and over) will be sleeping in separate rooms.

WORKSITE INFORMATION

CHWC will partner with Catholic Charities. This will be a very different CHWC Workcamp experience but we are excited about the challenge of aiding this part of the country that truly needs help.

Project Summary

Catholic HEART Workcamp will be partnering with “Operations Helping Hands”, a program of Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of New Orleans to assist the community in reoccupying their homes. In the devastating wake of Hurricane Katrina, Catholic HEART Workcamp will provide a desperately needed service to the people of Greater New Orleans – by amassing work campers willing to lend a hand.  Hurricane Katrina was the worst disaster in the nation’s history. Never before has a natural event caused so much destruction in a densely populated area.  The outcome of this effort will add to the future health of the city and confirm the commitment of serving those in need.

Project Goals

  • Demonstrate the love of Christ through helping hands

  • Mobilize and manage a group of college students, young adults and adults to help the neediest home owners within the Archdiocese of New Orleans to clean up their neighborhoods and restore their homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

  • Strengthen the solidarity of parishes, Catholic Charities agencies and other partnering groups across the Archdiocese

Types of Work Undertaken

  • General cleanup of neighborhoods, of trees and other debris

  • General cleanup inside homes (sweeping, mopping, removing carpet, moving furniture, removing drywall, surface cleaning)

  • Light carpentry for homes not damaged by water

  • Restoration work (light carpentry, flooring, drywall installation, painting)

General Guidelines/Safety Considerations

  • Campers must have a tetanus shot within the last 10 years

  • Campers must have heavy shoes (work boots or hiking boots)

  • Campers are asked to wear work clothes appropriate to the often filthy working conditions.  Even in warm weather, long sleeves and pants will ensure fewer cuts, scrapes and mosquito bites.

  • Campers must have a mask and gloves (both heavy work gloves and plastic gloves)

  • Campers are encouraged to use mosquito repellant, especially in areas of the city where there has been standing water.

  • Campers will be sleeping on the floor so each person must bring sleeping bags, pillow, air mattress and towel
