Team Captain Job Responsibility

  With the camp…..

  • Organize the unpacking and packing up of u-haul

  • Oversee the clean up of vehicles, vans, U-haul, RV at school

  • Assist the manager when needed

  • Help with registration

  • Help the manager in the office when needed

  • MC evening program if manager or Walkers are not.

  • Help up in tool room if needed on first evening of camp with the laying out of tools and supplies based on work orders, the first morning in handing out supplies and when team arrive in afternoon on last workday.

  • Oversee set up and tear down of mandatory and optional Masses.  Ask Priests attending masses about saying Masses and assist him in any liturgical needs he may have.

  • When not preoccupied with skit rehearsals, assist manger for mandatory and optional adult meetings

  • Call and gather team for evening staff meetings

  • Make sure lights are turned off and doors are locked each evening

  • Oversee the nurse.  Talk to her about her responsibilities and how we need her assistance.  Designate a room or space for here to work

  • A end of week collect money and forms for summary videos

  • Rehearse skits with parish groups doing dramas for morning and evening program.  Morning skits will be rehearsed the night before after evening program. Evening skit rehearsal will be at 4:30 before dinner.  Communicate with parish leader to make sure they have everything they need

  • Make sure props are ready for Carpenter Commandos.  Assist them during crowdbreakers.  (Example bringing chairs, props out and take off stage after game)

  • Make sure staff are doing what is needed at program (morning and evening)

  • If you see trash, pick it up.

  • Go to worksites to take pictures if needed.

  • Trouble shoot with participating adults that are grumbling or complaining

  • Run errands when needed

  • Be aware of potential problems before they arrive

  • Be an example of someone that "goes the extra mile"

  • Make sure the spirit of prayer is present

  • Oversee liturgy.  Make sure Priests is secured and assist him with any details needed for Mass.  It is important to clean and purify chalices after use.  Please check linens.  If dirty please take them to be washed and ironed. 

With staff……

  • Responsible for check, money and master card on the road to pay for hotel & gas, receipts in. Save & organize receipts.  There will be a file box available for this.      

  • Oversee staff and make sure all tasks are being done

  • Facilitate free days with staff members. Staff members will get day off every other week.  Times for day off is from morning until 6:00.

  • Clarify who is doing what and when with team. Confirm roles and responsibilities

  • Help in affirming, encouraging, motivating and evaluating any staff member that may be exhibiting low job performance.

  • Help with problems or tension between staff members.

  • Give a break to staff members when it seems he/she is tired

  • Be a buffer, go-between and liaison between manager and Walkers.  If a problem arises with staff, team captain will step in and try to resolve issue. 

  • The team captain will approach person in delicate manner and communicate concerns or questions of manager or Walkers regarding the behavior, effort or attitude of a staff member. 

  • If a concern is brought up from a staff about a manager or Walkers, team captain will deal with it appropriately.  The team manger should handle the staff concern as well as bring it to attention of manager or Walkers if it seems necessary.

  • Make sure schedule is running on time.

  • Provide and support goals/mission of Workcamp

  • Maintain organization and focus

  • Delegate work load and activities

  • Change roles of team members if work is not getting done right, too slow, or not at all.

  • You are one of the team members and yet have a separate role. Sometimes you may have to confront or correct another team member and step out of your friendship role with person. You may have to risk having tension in the relationship.

  • Administering discipline when needed and deal with conflict and challenges

  • Have the big picture in mind

  • Affirm and recognize team members for their work

  • Set the example of a servant

  • Develop mutual respect and trust among team members. When the level of trust is low among staff and between the team and leader, it is difficult to depend on each other.

  • Support team members efforts to get things done by working collaboratively

  • Make sure team members feel part of team and clicks are not formed

  • Find solutions to problems. Help facilitate others to engage in brainstorming.

  • Make sure team members feel listened to.

  • Build accountability with team members.

  • Celebrate differences in team members in order for the team to grow 

  • Deal with unmet expectations or frustrations of staff

  • Deal with interpersonal team differences, conflict and "power plays"

  • Improve team skills. People are not born knowing how to perform well in a team. Observe team skills that member's naturally posses and those that they lack.

  • Make adjustments and changes when needed
