Cumberland, MD

Bishop Walsh School is a Pre-K-12 Catholic School in the Appalachian Mountains of Western Maryland. It is located in historic Cumberland, once the “Queen City” of Maryland. Most of Cumberland’s industry departed in the 1980s, leaving many proud, working-class people without jobs. We will be serving elderly and poor residents with home repair, as well as churches, service organizations, and nursing homes. The school rests on Haystack Mountain in a quiet, safe neighborhood with beautiful views, outdoor areas for free time, nature trails, and an outdoor natural cathedral, constructed by students, for prayer. The gym will be available for basketball. There is ample parking.

• Program Area: Program will be located in the auditorium, which is air-conditioned. The cafeteria is also air-conditioned.
• Showers: There are separate showers for guys and girls in the school. The showers have been recently renovated.
• Sleeping Arrangements: We will use classrooms to sleep in during the week. Most all of the classrooms have window unit A/C, but a few are not air-conditioned. Guys will be on one floor and girls will be on a separate floor.

*Please note: Busses are not recommended for our Cumberland camp, as many work projects are reached via narrow back roads and dirt roads, which can be difficult for larger vehicles to navigate. For the best experience, we suggest avoiding large vehicles like buses.

CHWC will be partnering with local agencies to provide home repairs, wheelchair ramp repair and maintenance, painting, cleaning and general fix-up for the elderly and low income communities. There are many projects we will be working on and many residents we look forward to serving!
